A particular sport becomes particularly interesting when there is a confident sports figure who appears out of nowhere and starts beating everyone and wins almost everything there is to win within a relatively short period of time.
Roger Federer is a fine example of a confident sports figure who appears out of nowhere and starts beating everyone and wins almost everything there is to win within a relatively short period of time.
Yesterday, he totally thrashed a very shaken Andy Murray to clinch his 16th championship title, i.e. the Australian Open at Melbourne. Now, tennis is one of the most demanding sports that will not directly kill you, and to be able to win any title in tennis is already considered a considerable feat. Federer, who is not the tallest or the fastest or the strongest or the meanest, has set a standard so high that it eclipses those of other sports as well. His skill is exquisite, his determination is second to none. And to top it all, he is down to earth and does not has any known enemies. All these make a true champion, a champion that sounds too good to be true, except that it is true. I refuse to comment on Federer's unrivalled way of playing, because somehow, you can never describe it concisely. You just have to see to believe. Anyhow, Federer is the best role model and source of aspiration anyone can ask for. My only hope is that he'll be around long enough so that we can fully assimilate all the right attitude and sportsmanship that Federer exudes without any pretence whatsoever. Roger Federer, I salute you.
